CHRISTMAS SPECIAL: GROOVE TO YOUR OWN TUNES

Having battled Hypermobility Syndrome (HSD), the more extreme version of which is version is called Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome (EDS), psoriasis, and psoriatic arthritis. Navya Singh is a fierce warrior who has made it her mission to run inclusive dance classes for the chronically ill and disabled and has built an empowering and exciting community of her own. She is the winner of the RR Impact Award Individual category at The Restore Awards 2021. We at Unhurry interviewed her about her journey. Here is an engaging read of this interview!

Q. What prompted you to begin your journey?

NS: Boredom and annoyance. My injuries had rendered me unable to attend dance classes. And I was sick of it! So, I put on some music and started doing some upper body movements. It was a quick, thoughtless impulse, that led to a beautiful journey.

Q. When you began, were there other people like you struggling in the same space? If yes, what would your message be to them?

NS: Yes, but very few! I could only find a handful of disabled dancers and instructors. My message to them is to keep going! There are tons of people like us. People who’ve had to give up dancing due to health issues. They deserve a second chance. I’ve talked to them and invited them into disabled-friendly classes. Seeing their faces light up is an indescribable feeling.

As they learn how to move their upper bodies, they realize they don’t have to give up dance after all! Let’s keep going and spread this hope!

Q. What are the three top things you have learned in this journey?

NS: 1. Health is irreplaceable.

2. Your environment greatly impacts your wellbeing.

3. There’s always a way to achieve your dreams!

Q. If you were to look back at your earlier self, what would be one piece of advice/message you would give to yourself?

NS: Find healthcare workers who take your symptoms more seriously.

Q. What was your reaction when you were told that you were winning The Restore trophy out of 1118 nominations?

NS: I was in disbelief! How on earth was my work this impactful?!

Q. What are your plans for 2022?

NS: Finetune my career aspirations and focus on nutrition! I have HSD, psoriasis, and psoriatic arthritis, and believe nutrition can greatly ease my symptoms.

Q. Give one message to the readers of this platform that will inspire them to stay strong and positive.

NS: Love yourself. Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself as you treat others. How can you get through tough times if you aren’t your own best friend?
