Those tiny hands
That grabbed the tubes
Inserted in her
Should have been, holding me
The grimace on the little face
From the pain of needles
Turned to anger
Of wanting to be set free
There lay the girl who made me mom
She chose me
My breasts engorged
My heart wrenched
I watched her fight
With her fists clenched
The doctors in the NICU
Had a serious look
They said we can’t tell
If she’ll ever be with you
I rolled my eyes, and held my heart
You’re wrong I said
The girl who made me mom
Is a fighter and smart
You don’t know yet
But she chose me
She’ll rise quickly
And laugh at you
She’ll hug me tight
And I’ll hear her coo
The docs just shook
Their heads and said
Let’s see, let’s see
It’s not likely
She’ll be with you
4 weeks they said, we won’t know
Her papa became
The milkman for her
Transporting my breast milk
To save his girl
6th day they called us
Said take her home
She’ll do okay
She’s fought the odds
I said I know
The girl who made me mom, she chose me
Coz I’d made a deal
With the gods
In 2 months today
She’ll be 27 years old
But every time she hugs me
I sing that same line in my heart
The girl who made me mom, she chose me
Coz I made a deal
With the gods

beautifully penned ….loved the line she chose me…coz I made deal with the god
