The conversation on mental health has shifted in recent years, moving beyond conventional treatment methods, and exploring lifestyle choices that may have an impact on psychological wellness. One such significant aspect is that of food and nutrition and its significance in mental health. Researchers at the University of Manchester analysed data from around 46,000 individuals to understand the impact of different diets on depression symptoms. Weight loss, nutrient-boosting, and fat-reduction diets were all found to reduce symptoms of depression.
Analysis of 16 trials involving 45,826 participants revealed that various dietary improvements—whether focused on weight loss, fat reduction, or nutrient enhancement—had equally positive effects on mental health.
“Our data add to the growing evidence to support lifestyle interventions as an important approach to tackling low mood and depression. Specifically, our results within this study found that when dietary interventions were combined with exercise, a greater improvement in depressive symptoms was experienced by people. Taken together, our data highlight the central role of eating a healthier diet and taking regular exercise to act as a viable treatment to help people with low mood,” said Dr Brendon Stubbs, co-author of the study and Clinical Lecturer at the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre and King’s College London.
The research advises:
- Making small adjustments to your diet, like eating more nutrient-rich foods (high in fiber, and vegetables) while reducing intake of fast foods and sugars, can have a positive impact on mental health.
- Highly specialized or specific diets might not be necessary for the average individual. Instead, focusing on basic dietary improvements can yield significant mental health benefits.
- Combining dietary changes with regular exercise shows an even greater improvement in depressive symptoms.
- The study observed greater benefits for women from dietary interventions, suggesting a need for more tailored interventions or further research into the reasons behind this disparity.
- Lifestyle changes, such as healthier eating habits and regular physical activity, are highlighted as important approaches to addressing low mood and depression.
