How Your Lack of Sleep Can Lead To Diabetes

Compromising on your sleep to get your work done? Losing as little as 30 minutes of sleep per day on weekdays can have long-term consequences for body weight and metabolism, a new study finds. The results were presented at ENDO 2015, the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society in San Diego, USA. While previous studies have shown that short sleep duration increases risk for obesity and diabetes, this study found that as little as 30 minutes a day of compromised sleep can have significant effects on obesity and insulin resistance.

Due to social and work commitments, people often sleep less on weekdays and make up for lost sleep over the weekend. But weekday sleep debt may lead to long-term metabolic disruption, which can promote the onset of, or push the progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus. As per the study, in one year, for every 30 minutes of weekday sleep debt at baseline, the risk of obesity and insulin resistance was significantly increased by 17% and 39%, respectively.

Time for a snooze?
