Turn To Music For A Better Night’s Sleep

Alternative methods to aid sleep have been increasing in numbers. The study by the University of Sheffield, UK, and colleagues looked at the widespread use of music as a potential solution for sleep difficulties. This work gives a new understanding of complex motivations that drive people to reach for music as a sleep aid.   

The study surveyed 651 respondents from various backgrounds and demographics to understand the use of music as a sleep aid among different groups. Findings suggest that 62% of the respondents use music to improve their sleep, indicating a diverse range of musical genres and artists. Interestingly, even those without sleep issues integrate music into their bedtime routines, particularly younger individuals with higher musical engagement.

“The largest ever survey of everyday use of music for sleep reveals multiple pathways to effect that goes far beyond relaxation; these include auditory masking, habit, passion for music, and mental distraction. This work offers new understanding into the complex motivations that drive people to reach for music as a sleep aid and the reasons why so many find it effective,” the authors said.
